Hot tub rules for guests: free printable sign
A clear rules sign next to the hot tub protects your guests and you. This free, printable sign covers the rules most hosts and safety guides agree on, plus a second page that tells guests how to use the tub. Edit the blanks (number of people, contact, temperature) and laminate it.

The rules on the sign
- Shower before you get in.
- Maximum number of people at a time (fill in your tub's seat count).
- Limit a soak to 15-20 minutes, then cool down; get out at once if dizzy or too hot.
- Children under 5 should not use the hot tub; older children only with an adult watching.
- Pregnant, heart or blood pressure conditions, or on medication: check with a doctor first.
- No alcohol or drugs before or while using it.
- No glass in or around the tub.
- Do not use it after diarrhoea in the last 48 hours, or with an open wound or skin infection.
- No pets, bubble bath, oils or soap in the water.
- Heads above water, long hair tied up, away from suction fittings.
- Cover back on and locked after every use.
The sign also tells guests what to do if the water looks cloudy, foamy or smells strongly: stop and tell you. That one line catches most problems before a complaint.
Page two: how to use the hot tub
Most guest questions are about the cover, the jets button and the temperature. Page two has blanks for each, plus thunderstorm advice and a "last tested" box. Guests increasingly ask to see test records; the box shows you test between stays.
Hosts: what to do between stays
- Test and adjust free chlorine or bromine and pH; keep the result. The hot tub chlorine calculator gives the dose in grams.
- Clean the filter and the water line; change the water as often as your use and your manufacturer require.
- In the UK, a hot tub used by paying guests is a work activity: see holiday let hot tub regulations (HSG282) for the testing and record rules and a free log.
General guidance, not legal or medical advice. Follow your hot tub's manual, your insurer and local rules.
Want a step-by-step plan from your own test?
Clearly turns your pool or hot tub water test into an ordered plan: what to add, how much and in what order, for any brand of chemicals. It works offline and needs no account.

General information, not professional advice. Always follow the product label and your pool manufacturer's guidance. Never mix chemicals, add chemical to water (not water to chemical), wear eye and skin protection, and keep children and pets away while treating the water.
Frequently asked questions
What rules should a hot tub have for guests?
The common ones: shower first, a maximum number of people, 15-20 minute soaks, no children under 5, medical advice for pregnancy or heart conditions, no alcohol or glass, no use after diarrhoea, and the cover back on after use.
How long should guests stay in a hot tub?
15 to 20 minutes at a time is the usual advice, less at the maximum temperature of 40 °C (104 °F), then cool down before getting back in.
Do I need a hot tub rules sign for an Airbnb or holiday let?
A sign is the simplest way to show guests the safety rules and how to use the tub. In the UK, a hot tub used by paying guests also falls under HSE guidance HSG282, which covers testing and records.
